Symphony_DYO

The DYO Symphony Orchestra comprises approximately 120 players. Many of our players came through the ranks of the Junior Strings, Intermediate and Concert Orchestras, and will have spent six years as a member of the DYO before joining the Symphony Orchestra.

Following two years in the Concert Orchestra each player must audition to become a member of the DYO Symphony Orchestra; however, we also welcome players from outside the DYO to audition at this stage. Our players are typically fifth- and sixth-year school students and many bring their experience in the DYO into third-level orchestras, cementing friendships established through many years of DYO.

Under the expert guidance of our conductor, Fergus Sheil, and the orchestra tutors, we have explored an interesting and varied repertoire. In the past few years we have performed Djvorak’s “New World” Symphony No 9, Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No 5 and Sibelius’ Symphony No 5.

The Symphony Orchestra has undertaken numerous successful overseas tours, most recently to Florida in 2010 and 2012. In 2013 the orchestra has broken new territory in a collaboration with the Irish National Youth Ballet, in performances of Tchaikovsky’s The Sleeping Beauty, Danse Macabre by Saint-Saëns and A Night on a Bare Mountain by Mussorgsky.
