The DYO Symphony Orchestra comprises approximately 95 players. Many of these players have come through the ranks of the Junior Stings, Intermediate and Concert Orchestras, and will have already spent 6 years as a member of DYO before joining the Symphony. The age range within the Symphony Orchestra is from 15 to 20 with some players remaining with us into their third level education.
The Symphony Orchestra has undertaken many numerous successful overseas tours, to Leuven in Belguim in 2020 and Lisbon in Portugal in 2018. In 2013 The Orchestra collaborated with the Irish National Youth Ballet, in performances of Tchaikovsky’s The Sleeping Beauty.
Fergus Sheil is one of Ireland’s leading conductors and creative producers. He is the founding Artistic Director of Irish National Opera.
With Irish National Opera, Fergus has conducted Verdi’s Aida and Rossini’s La Cenerentola at the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre, Dublin as well as the world premiere of Brian Irvine’s Least Like The Other at the 2019 Galway International Arts Festival. Previously Fergus has also conducted or Wide Open Opera, Opera Theatre Company, NI Opera, Opera Ireland, Scottish Opera, Welsh National Opera and others companies. His opera productions have appeared internationally in Edinburgh, London, Amsterdam, New York and Luxembourg. His productions have received many awards including Allianz Business to Arts, Irish Times Irish Theatre Awards and the coveted European prize the Fedora Award for Opera.
